This netsuke shows a monkey on a branch reaching over to grab a persimmon. It could have picked a fruit closer to itself but decided to go for the biggest one, even though it required more effort to reach it. A better result always requires more effort.
The figurine is carved from mammoth tusk, and the eyes are inlayed with mother-of-pearl and jet stone.
